CPB is currently seeking to hire a SVP, Journalism and Radio reporting to EVP/Chief Operating Officer.

General Description:

The SVP, Journalism and Radio leads CPB’s efforts to advance public media’s journalism efforts, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.  Oversees the development of strategy and policy, the execution of initiatives, and the management of the funds for public media journalism content. Oversees the development of strategy for public radio content, development, station operations, and the community at large. Oversees the development of policy for all radio station grant programs, including eligibility and certification criteria on-going station requirements for various funding levels, and case-by-case efforts to address individual station issues and concerns with regard to CPB grants policies and practices.

Specific Duties:

  • Working with CPB’s leadership, formulates a vision, develops strategies and plans to advance public media’s (television and radio) journalism service to the nation.
  • Works with television and radio news and public affairs content producers, stations, and national organizations to develop funding priorities and content and distribution initiatives to strengthen and expand public media’s journalism capacity and service locally, regionally, and nationally. 
  • Leads efforts to advance editorial integrity in public media.
  • Oversees the development of policy and strategy for public radio, in consultation with senior management and other staff as appropriate. 
  • Ensures appropriate management of grants to ensure optimal long-term results, to maximize CPB’s and public media journalism and public radio’s return on investment, and to assure compliance with CPB policies and practices for grant management.
  • Oversees the Public Radio Program Fund and CPB’s non-programming investments in public radio.  Shapes priorities for programming and system investments that will help public radio successfully navigate industry challenges. Oversees projects and proposals for existing CPB radio programming funds and initiatives. Ensures proper management and distribution of funds. Provides guidance and support to producers receiving CPB funds as needed.
  • Extends public radio ’s service to new audiences by applying media consumption research, by experimenting with new content creation and distribution models, by developing new service paradigms, and by establishing new working models with content producers and stations. 
  • Oversees the development of policy for CPB grants to stations (Community Services Grants, National Program Production and Acquisition Grants, Rural Listener Access Incentive Fund, and others). 
  • Ensures that funding decisions advance Board-approved goals and objectives and annual business plans and are consistent with statutory requirements. Important objectives include quality, diversity, and the statutory mandates of balance and objectivity and producer independence.  
  • Serves as primary liaison between CPB and the public radio industry and champions CPB’s vision and role as a catalyst for change to others in the system to develop support and foster collaboration.
  • Works with national organizations, producers and stations to advance CPB’s core strategy: Digital (effectively applying digital technologies to content creation and distribution), Diversity (serving an increasingly diverse America), and Dialogue (engaging communities actively in public television and public media content initiatives); and to ensure that initiatives are developed with a sound understanding of system, audience, and producer needs.
  • Works closely with the CPB leadership to support the CPB Board and Board Committees.
  • Provides effective leadership to both the Journalism and Radio Department staff.  Establishes measurable outcomes for CPB investments, monitors the performance of grantees in achieving these outcomes, and applies this information to future decisions.
  • Creates business processes and develops appropriate performance benchmarks that foster effective, productive departments marked by creativity, accountability, quality, and teamwork internally and externally with company colleagues.
  • Manages journalism and radio operations and conducts CPB business in an ethical and fiscally responsible way, ensuring that all activities are performed in compliance with budget, procurement, and other CPB policies, standards, and procedures.  Ensures that CPB funds are proactively and prudently managed in a manner consistent with CPB policy.

Required Qualifications:

  • An in-depth understanding of public media, journalism, radio, and communication policy issues. Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent experience.
  • Ten years of senior management-level experience, including significant experience as a journalist. 
  • Demonstrated success developing journalism content using multiple platforms.
  • Significant experience developing and communicating strategies for achieving business objectives, organizing and managing multiple priorities, and in developing and managing projects and budgets. 
  • Demonstrated staff management experience with strong leadership skills reflecting the ability to hire, motivate, develop, and lead others, resolve conflicts, and ensure the achievement of results through effective performance management.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to persuade, make effective presentations before both external and internal audiences.
  • A high level of professional executive presence including confidence, integrity, and decisiveness, for interacting with key leadership, decision-makers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for building and fostering key internal and external business relationships, as well as the ability to lead and perform effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • The ability to demonstrate good judgment and critical thinking at both the strategic and functional levels.
  • Ability to travel.

  • Advanced Degree.
