Globalizing a Topic

The minimum wage lead also “globalized” the topic for listeners by framing it in a national context and promising that listeners would hear how wages in North Carolina compare to other states. We know from the 2006 Sense of Place study, that this “connect the dots” approach is highly valued by our listeners; “Our listeners assign personal importance to news and information programming that resonates with their core values – intelligence, civility, authenticity, and a global perspective….Our listeners will not value a story that has been approached from a merely local perspective”, i.e. narrowly, without adding value and perspective by framing local events in the context of broader trends and developments.

An example of what we mean by Making a Story More than “Merely Local."
