In these times of increasing competition it is essential that we take our production and presentation skills to the next level. The interview is the most fundamental and important skills we use every day.

This intensive 2-day workshop with David Candow is designed to train the trainers – that is, help PD’s go back to their stations with the knowledge to help improve their staffs interview skills.  It will be held September 13 and 14th, just prior to the 2009 Public Radio Programming Conference in Cleveland.

David Candow has been recognized as one of the top trainers in the public radio system. For example, last year he was given an award by PRNDI for his training contributions to public radio. The Washington Post also published a profile of him entitled, When This Guy Talks NPR Listens.  Candow was a keynote speaker at the 2005 PRPD Conference, and also presented a breakout session on Writing For Radio that received a standing ovation in a room filled to capacity. In addition he has done training at dozens of public radio stations both here and abroad.

Jeff Hansen, Chair of PRPD’s Training Committee, suggested that PRPD offer this advanced workshop, based on work Candow has been doing at KUOW, developing an interview training curriculum. We are now thrilled to be able to offer a new version of the training specifically customized for Program Directors. In short, the objective of the work shop will be: Learning how to better direct your staff to produce better interviews

The course will explore ways in which Program Directors can improve the techniques they use to advance the interviewing skills of their Talk Show hosts and reporters. Participants will learn to recognize the areas in which improvement is necessary for anyone on their staff who does interviewing.  And, PD’s will learn to acutely listen for the The 10 Yellow Flags of Interviewing. These points will help them to better critique and direct their interviewing and talk shows people. They are:

  • Tone
  • Focus
  • What, why, where, when, who, and how questions
  • Questions with verb leads and guesses
  • Statements for questions
  • The interview as story
  • Finding the emotion
  • Show don't tell
  • The open
  • Reading the interviewee or subject
Cost for this 2-day intensive is $525 for PRPD members, $695 for non-members.  Register Now
