Host Call Handling

Unless a caller is REALLY good, move through callers quickly.

Don’t hesitate to move on when callers go off topic, are long-winded or get on a soapbox. Most listeners will appreciate your keeping the focus.

Try to avoid being formulaic in the way you both bring callers on the air, and the way you move on from a caller:

  • It is not necessary to begin every call by thanking the caller for calling.
  • Try not to say goodbye to every caller.

Both can easily become on air clutter. Have your screener thank callers when they pick up the phone. The screener can also tell callers that there may not be a formal ON AIR goodbye from the host.

Don't allude to callers waiting on hold. It sends listeners the wrong message: that they'll have to wait on hold. Who's got time for that?
