Inland Northwest Regional Multi-Media Journalist

This Northwest Public Broadcasting (NWPB), Inland Northwest Regional Multi-Media Journalist position reports to and is managed by the NWPB news manager or their designee. It requires an individual with strong news reporting skills to produce network-quality news and feature reports. This person will work with a regional news team to gather, write, and produce spots and features for radio and digital platforms with particular emphasis on the Inland Northwest, Spokane/North Idaho; Pullman/ Moscow; Lewiston/Clarkston, Northeastern Washington, North-Central Idaho and surrounding regions for Northwest Public Broadcasting, Spokane Public Radio and other public media outlets in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

The correspondent will work closely with the news/editorial manager at Northwest Public Broadcasting to determine daily, weekly and long-term editorial coverage priorities and editing/management/feedback structure. Assignments may include projects or stories requested from Spokane Public Radio or other public news organizations in the Inland Northwest.

The correspondent is expected to collaborate and lead major projects, file for a national audience when needed, and be a leading presence and news source on radio, social media and digital platforms. Northwest Public Broadcasting expect correspondents to adhere to the highest standards of ethical journalism, including but not limited to those outlined by the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Position will be located in either the Spokane, WA/Coeur d’Alene, ID area OR the Pullman, WA/Moscow, ID area at the discretion and mutual agreement of Northwest Public Broadcasting and the correspondent. Travel throughout the Inland Northwest/North Idaho region is required.

Required Qualifications:

Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in broadcasting, mass communications, or closely related field, and two (2) years of radio broadcast and/or news reporting experience, which has included experience in gathering, writing, editing, and producing news and feature reports.

Additional Requirements:

• Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver’s license.
• Experience in digital, print, television, and/or radio news reporting or other related news gathering experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for education and professional radio experience.
• Commitment to and understanding of the highest standards of ethical journalism principles, including but not limited to the Code of Ethics of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience in public media news reporting.
• Experience in podcasting and other long-form and in-depth storytelling techniques.
• Demonstrated experience in professional news journalism.
• Experience covering natural resource and environmental issues, such as water scarcity, climate change, forest health and wildfires.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of MS-Windows and Mac computer operating systems and software.
• Demonstrated knowledge of AP style.
• Experience in digital audio editing.
• Demonstrated subject matter competency in statehouse politics and rural issues.
• Bilingual and the ability to read, write and speak English proficiently.
