DIRECTOR OF AUDIO CONTENT 

Central Florida public media stations WMFE and WMFV are seeking a creative, collaborative, and highly skilled audio content and programming professional to become their next Director of Audio Content. We’re building a highly integrated Content Leadership Team to develop and implement strategies for leveraging current, emerging, and future platforms to strengthen our service to existing and potential audiences. The Audio Content Director will serve alongside specialists in News, Digital, and Outreach to accomplish these goals, while leading the organization’s audio content and programming strategy to new levels of excellence.

The stations are operated by Community Communications, Inc., based in Orlando. We are the primary providers of NPR and public media content in east Central Florida. Position Summary 
The Director of Audio Content ensures WMFE produces, acquires, and effectively presents and distributes creative and engaging audio journalism and fact-based content. The Director is responsible for reaching and expanding current and potential audiences with this content on legacy and emerging platforms. The Director creates and implements deliberate strategies to expand and diversify the audience for WMFE’s audio content. As part of WMFE’s Content Leadership Team, the Director maintains constant collaboration with the News and Digital Directors to create and implement a holistic content strategy for the organization and to ensure all content upholds the highest standards of quality, editorial integrity and ethics. This position is based in Orlando, Florida; the Director must reside within WMFE/V’s coverage area.  
 

Annual Salary Range: $77,000 - $90,000 
 

Key Responsibilities:

● Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement WMFE’s multi-platform content strategy, in collaboration with other members of the Content Leadership Team. Work with the station’s senior leadership team as an active participant in strategic planning and decision making for the organization as a whole.
● Collaboration: Work with other members of the Content Leadership Team as a cohesive unit to implement content strategy and uphold content standards. Foster an environment of cohesiveness and collaboration across all station departments. Liaise regularly with operations, sponsorship, and other relevant units to design and implement promotion and inventory management strategies for audio products. Participate in the strategy, planning, and execution of fund drives, in collaboration with development staff. Build successful relationships with industry colleagues to stay informed of trends and best practices.
● Audio Content Leadership: Oversee all audio content through the lens of audience advocacy, ensuring such content meets the highest possible quality and performance standards. Recommend and, where appropriate, oversee new audio products for local and national distribution, including on-demand audio (podcasts).
● Programming: Primary responsibility for FM & HD programming and sound, including coaching local talent, curating national content, and scheduling FM and HD programming.
● Editorial Integrity: Joint responsibility, along with the News and Digital Directors, for and upholding and advocating for the highest standards of editorial integrity.
● Metrics and Data Analytics:  Research and report on key audience metrics and adjust audio programming and audience development strategy based on that data, in light of mission-driven goals.
● Recruitment, Training & Support: Recruit, manage, and support contractors and potential new staff members as the organization grows. Assess the department’s structure and establish effective roles, responsibilities, and workflows.
 
Qualifications & Skills for Success
● At least 5 years professional experience in radio programming, journalism, audio production or a related field
● Understanding and commitment to principles of ethical journalism and enthusiasm for WMFE’s mission to provide public service journalism to Central Florida
● Advanced collaboration skills and high comfort level working as a team to make decisions and implement strategy
● Understanding of best practices for radio programming strategy and stationality
● Experience in audio production and understanding of high-quality production standards
● Experience in public media preferred
● Familiarity with radio automation software preferred
● Personnel management experience preferred
● Ability to articulate and present verbally and in writing
● High degree of independent thinking and self-responsibility
● Self-motivated, outgoing, and ability to meet deadlines and achieve results

Location and Working Conditions 

This position is based in Orlando, Florida. The incumbent should reside in Central Florida, but remote work (i.e., work from home) options are available. 

Much of this work is done in an indoor location. Some offsite work required for fundraising and events. There may be extended periods of working at a computer. This position must be available for meetings, trainings, and operational emergencies outside of normal working hours.
